A

new polar research ship, named after the presenter and naturalist Sir David Attenborough, has left a shipyard in Birkenhead to test scientific equipment and conduct sea trials.

RRS Sir David Attenborough will look at how climate change is affecting the continent and its surrounding waters.

Aboard the ship is Boaty McBoatface, the robotic submarine named in honour of an online poll which suggested the cheeky name for the polar ship.
